Tranan Publishing House (“The Crane“) published its first book in 1992. Since then, we have published more than 300 titles of foreign literature, translated into Swedish from more than 35 languages. Our self-proclaimed mission has always been to broaden the Swedish book market and contribute to linguistic and geographic diversity. Thus, we have a particular interest in literature from parts of the world that other Swedish publishing houses tend to neglect, such as Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.
Authors published by us in Swedish include such internationally well-known writers as Chinua Achebe, Jorge Luis Borges, Clarice Lispector, Roberto Bolaño, Thomas Bernhard, Federico García Lorca, Jamaica Kincaid, Kamel Daoud, Salim Barakat and Viet Thanh Nguyen – among many, many more.
We are particularly proud of our series of short story anthologies from various countries, which we call Berättarserien (“The story telling series”). To date, we have published anthologies from 25 countries, including for instance Cambodia, Egypt and Brazil. With this series, we have introduced a long list of exciting authors that otherwise would have remained unavailable to Swedish readers.
The announcement of the Chinese author Mo Yan as the laureate of the 2012 Nobel Prize in literature was a milestone in the history of our publishing house. We first published Mo Yan’s extraordinary work in 1997.
Tranan is based in Stockholm and Gothenburg, with our main office located in the Södermalm district in central Stockholm.
